Drum set, Percussion, and Ukulele Teacher in Eugene

Paul recently moved to Oregon from central Illinois. He has his Bachelor's degree in Audio Recording Technology and Masters in Jazz Performance from Eastern Illinois University specializing in Jazz Vibraphone. He loves playing and teaching music as a way to connect with people! Some of his favorite genres are jazz and video game music.

What sparked your passion for music? 

I started playing guitar when I was 8 years old and was encouraged by my parents to take lessons. I discovered I loved learning and playing songs for other people. I became more serious about music in high school when I started playing with some friends in a little garage rock band and started learning solo classical guitar pieces. I joined band in school as a percussionist and quickly discovered it was a class I really looked forward to.

How’d your music go from there? 

When I went to college I decided to switch my major (after one week) from business to music and focus on percussion. That is when I discovered my love for jazz, mallet percussion, and especially jazz vibraphone, which is my favorite thing to play. After finishing my bachelors in Audio Recording technology I took a year off school and then returned to get a masters in jazz performance focusing on the vibraphone as my main instrument. Now, my passion for music continues to grow through teaching others!

What do you express through your music? 

The thing I try to express most through my music is the importance of being in the moment and connection with others. When the music I am playing or listening to is right, all other thoughts fall away and I can be united fully with the people and sounds I am with.

Your message to aspiring artists? 

Be curious. Explore as many things as possible to ultimately discover what interests and excites you. Art takes effort and time, but it can be one of the most meaningful ways to express oneself. Make sure to meet other passionate people to learn from and create with, because music is fundamentally a collaborative art form where you get to meet and connect with many different folks!

Who would you most wanna jam with? 

I would love to jam with some of my jazz vibraphone heroes like Gary Burton or Mike Manieri, but also have to include Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) or Yussef Dayes on that list.
