How’d you end up at Music Masters?
Music has always been at the center of my life, whether in school, church, or the classroom. When I moved to Oregon for graduate school, I was looking for ways to keep teaching and sharing music outside of the university setting. Music Masters felt like the perfect fit—a place where I could bring both my professional training and my love of working with students of all ages.
What sparked your passion for music?
As much as I wish to have an inspiring story, the simple truth is that I was not doing well in school as a kid, and my family, with a lineage of musicians on both sides, wanted me to have a “back up” plan as a pianist. They are still in shock that I’m now in grad school.
How’d your music go from there?
I started with piano and singing, and over the years I explored cello in the orchestra and violin in Mariachi. I’ve had the privilege of directing choirs from elementary school through college, competing at festivals in Reno, Folsom, Santa Cruz, and Los Angeles, and collaborating on national arts initiatives such as Michelle Obama’s Turnaround Arts. Each step deepened my understanding of how music can shape lives, including my own.
Who would you most wanna jam with?
Jacob Collier, Pentatonix, Hans Zimmer.
Your message to aspiring artists?
According to my old report cards, you’re probably smarter than I was at your age. Do what you want with that information.
