How’d you end up at Music Masters?
I have always had a passion for teaching and analyzing music. I had heard many great things about Music Masters, so when I heard they needed a drum instructor I didn’t hesitate to apply! Turns out a lot of my friends and former classmates work here too, which creates a wonderful atmosphere.
What sparked your passion for music?
My parents always listened to all kinds of rock music growing up and I played a lot of Guitar Hero as a kid. By chance, I stumbled across the drums and began taking lessons from a family friend who was a drummer. Before I knew it, I was hooked!
How’d your music go from there?
I took a percussion class in 8th grade and then joined band in high school, and mainly listened to rock, funk and heavy metal, then I got into jazz in 10th grade and sought out other genres shortly after. By my last year I was playing in the wind ensemble, jazz band, jazz combo and jazz choir while taking lessons on drums and orchestral percussion, while also playing in rock bands with friends outside of school. I began studying at the University of Oregon as a music major in the percussion department while continuing to play jazz and rock gigs outside of school and taking classes in the jazz department. Now I play jazz and rock gigs all around the Northwest, play shows and write music with some friends in a punk rock band, and teach lessons. I couldn’t be happier!
Who would you most wanna jam with?
The Bad Plus, Ben Weinman, Frank Zappa, Evelyn Glennie, Tom Waits
What do you express through your music?
I love to tell stories through my music and bring light and energy to a room. Nothing makes me happier than connecting with another person through music, whether it’s with a few friends or in a packed concert hall.
Your message to aspiring artists?
Practice daily and listen to as much music as you can to find inspiration, especially live music of as many genres as you can seek out. Keep an open mind and let your passion lead you. Make music that makes you happy, with people who make you happy.
